Gig Work is Bridging India’s Job Gap and Lifting Earnings

India needs to create around 8 million non-farm jobs a year to keep pace with its workforce. Gig work alone could bridge close to 70% of that gap by 2030.

The gig internet workforce already stands at 6 million today and is on track to more than triple to nearly 20 million by the end of the decade. For ~54% of these workers, gig is their first paid job. It’s the first income they’ve ever earned.

Gig work is best read as a stepping-stone, and not a destination. The average worker sticks around for about three months, often using it to fund an education, a move to the city, or a shot at the next opportunity. Even so, the economics hold up: full-time gig workers take home up to 2.5 times what comparable informal roles pay.

The questions worth asking are changing 

The gig economy is no longer just about delivery and rides. Here is what’s worth asking now:

• More than half of today’s gig workers had no paid work before this, so is gig genuinely creating new earners, or mostly reshuffling the informal workforce?
• With most workers logging well under 40 hours a week, is this a job, a side hustle or something in between?
• Full-time gig work pays up to 2.5 times what comparable informal roles do, so what’s capping faster adoption?
• Welfare coverage is closing in on formal-sector benchmarks on paper, so why do so many workers still not use what they’re entitled to?

The strategic question beneath all of this: gig work is maturing from a stopgap into a genuine stepping stone job. So, who ensures workers know their benefits exist, can access them, and are equally included – platforms, policymakers, or both?

One number puts that gap in perspective: just 1% of India’s gig workforce today is female, well below the country’s overall female labour force participation rate.
