India's Insurance Distribution Market

How Redseer Helped Turtlemint Map the Case for Tech-Enabled, Assisted Insurance Distribution in India

Chhavi SinghChhavi Singh

Executive Summary

As Turtlemint prepared for a more public phase of its growth, Redseer produced an independent, third-party read of India’s insurance distribution market, sized and evidenced to the standard external stakeholders expect. The report set out how assisted, tech-enabled POSP distribution is unlocking insurance access across the country, and gave Turtlemint a defensible account of its market that it could put before investors and the wider public.

About the Client

Turtlemint is a leading tech-enabled insurance distribution platform in India, connecting consumers with insurers across the life, health, and motor categories through POSP intermediaries, and combining the reach of digital infrastructure with the trust of in-person assisted selling.

The Problem Statement

As it entered a more public phase of its journey, the client wanted to know whether the case for assisted, tech-enabled distribution could be evidenced to a third-party standard. Four questions framed the work:

  • Why assisted selling remains the dominant model in Indian insurance distribution, and how much of the market is direct and digital
  • How POSPs are being equipped with digital tools to drive access in Beyond-30 (B30+) markets, and their role in reaching Insurance for All by 2047, the IRDAI’s stated goal
  • What regulatory reform, including FDI policy changes, means for the market landscape
  • How the major digital insurance brokers are positioned across key performance metrics

The Approach

The engagement was structured across three areas –

First, Redseer mapped India’s insurance distribution landscape across the top 30 and B30+ cities, tracing the shift from traditional offline channels to digital platforms across the life, health, and motor segments, and sizing the opportunity across geographies.

Second, Redseer assessed the role of POSPs across those segments, evaluating how they are driving access and emerging as the fastest-growing distribution channel in the country.

Third, Redseer examined how digital platforms are enabling POSPs to issue policies faster, serve more customers, and operate at greater scale, and benchmarked the competitive positioning of the major digital brokers.

The Outcomes

Redseer delivered an independent market report built on four connected analyses:

  • Market landscape, sizing the opportunity across the life, health, and motor segments and identifying the drivers of growth
  • Regulatory assessment, setting out what key reforms and FDI changes mean for market structure
  • Digital broker scalability, assessing the growth potential of tech-enabled broker networks in B30+ markets
  • Competitive benchmarking, situating Turtlemint against the leading digital insurance brokers on operational and financial metrics

The report was cited in Turtlemint’s offer document and drawn on in its wider market communication, giving the company a third-party evidence base for its market position as it moved towards a public listing.
